Protests in support of a hunger and labor strike by immigrant inmates at Delaney Hall, a detention center in Newark, New Jersey have been militant. There have been conflicts between protestors and various police agencies. Dozens have been arrested. Activists held up large signs reading, “NO CONCENTRATION CAMPS.’
The immigrants in detention are protesting maggot-infested food, overcrowding, lack of blankets, and inadequate medical services. The neo-Nazi Proud Boys have shown up to support ICE and to confront the immigrants’ allies. After issuing an order to disperse, state troopers on horseback and in riot gear have rushed protestors. ICE has roughed up protestors, fired tear gas and arrested many anti-ICE activists. New Jersey Governor Mikie Sherrill, a Democrat, sent the state police to the site, she said, to keep order and reduce tensions as ICE withdrew. Newark Mayor Ras Baraka imposed a curfew and then lifted it.
Members of Indivisible, the Democratic Party caucus that has organized the No Kings protests, have criticized Sherril for saying that protestors had become violent. They held up signs reading, “Gov Sherrill, stop lying about Delaney Hall” and “NJ Staties were the aggressors.”
The protests continue with activists blocking vehicles trying to enter the facility.
