The Socialism and Freedom Party (PSL, for its initials in Spanish), Venezuelan section of the International Workers’ Unity-Fourth International, strongly condemns the brutal military aggression perpetrated by US imperialism against our country.

In the early hours of Saturday, January 3, at approximately 1:50 a.m., the government of far-right leader Donald Trump launched a bombing campaign using helicopters and drones against various military and civilian installations in Caracas and the states of La Guaira, Miranda, and Aragua. According to available information, several sites were bombed at Fort Tiuna—which also houses the Ministry of Defense—as well as facilities at the port of La Guaira, the country’s most important port, military installations in Maracay—a city located in central Venezuela an hour and a half from the capital—and civilian airports in Miranda. All of these locations are near Caracas.

The imperialist attacks occurred in densely populated areas, and the extent of the damage in terms of human and material losses is still unknown. However, official information from the Venezuelan government and from Trump himself announces the capture of Nicolás Maduro and Cilia Flores by US forces, and we therefore join in the demand for proof of life and information on their whereabouts and the conditions of their detention.

In Fort Tiuna, numerous residential buildings were reportedly damaged by the bombings, as was the case in Maracay, one of the country’s most populous cities. Attack helicopters and special forces units allegedly carried out the operation, despite the government’s declaration that it possessed the necessary defenses to repel any aggression.

Since September, the country had been the target of threats from US imperialism, with a massive military deployment in the Caribbean, the largest in the region since the invasion of Panama in 1989. In recent weeks, the military operation that the US called “Southern Spear” has grown increasingly larger: more than 20 bombings of vessels with a death toll of more than a hundred; the blockade of Venezuelan oil shipments; the seizure of ships and, more recently, the attack on a dock in La Guajira.

This is an unprecedented attack against Venezuela perpetrated by the US, the world’s leading imperialist power.

Our strongest condemnation to this criminal and cowardly attack against the Venezuelan people comes from a Left-opposition perspective. Maduro leads a repressive and authoritarian regime with hundreds of political prisoners and is implementing a brutal capitalist austerity, subjecting the working people to starvation wages and terrible public services.

We call upon the Venezuelan working people to reject this aggression against our sovereignty. Likewise, we urge the peoples of the world, and especially those of Latin America and the Caribbean, to take to the streets of their countries to protest this latest US aggression against a country in the region—yet another in its long list of interventions, now carried out under the guise of the so-called “Trump Corollary,” enshrined in the recently approved US national security document that seeks to reimpose the Monroe Doctrine in Latin America and the Caribbean.

Trump out of Latin America and the Caribbean!

This statement from the Socialism and Freedom Party (PSL) strongly condemns the US military’s “Southern Spear” operation, labeling it a brutal act of imperialist aggression against Venezuelan sovereignty 🇻🇪. While they remain a Left-opposition party to Maduro’s “authoritarian regime,” they categorically reject this foreign intervention, the capture of Maduro and Cilia Flores, and the bombing of populated areas like Caracas and Maracay 💣🏢. They warn that this attack, justified by the “Trump Corollary,” is a dangerous revival of the Monroe Doctrine aimed at controlling Latin America’s resources 🌎⚖️. The PSL is calling for global protests and “proof of life” for those captured, urging the working class to resist both imperialist bombs and domestic austerity ✊🚩.
