Los Angeles Group Statement on War with Iran

The Northeast Los Angeles Alliance for Democracy is part of the broader network of democracy and human rights activists in the U.S.

The Northeast Los Angeles Alliance for Democracy condemns the latest war on Iran launched by the U.S. Trump administration and the Israeli Netanyahu administration.  We also strongly oppose the brutal and authoritarian regime ruling Iran which has crushed democratic struggles of women, national minorities and student youth in that country for forty seven years.  

As U.S. activists who are deeply involved in the struggle against fascism and for democracy, civil rights and the rights of immigrants, we do not believe in the Trump administration’s claim that it will help the Iranian masses.  A Trump administration that is deporting hundreds of thousands of immigrants, putting people in concentration camps, killing innocent protesters on the streets and calling them “terrorists” cannot free the Iranian people. The Israeli government of Netanyahu which is responsible for the mass slaughter of over 73,000 Palestinians in Gaza cannot bring liberation to the Iranian people. 

Since Los Angeles is home to the largest Iranian community outside of Iran, we reach out in solidarity to members of this community while also distancing ourselves from Iranian monarchist and MEK organizing which supports the war launched by the U.S. and Israel and advocates another form of authoritarianism. 

We are concerned about the ramifications of this war for innocent civilians inside Iran, in the Middle East region and those of us in the U.S. who are fighting against the growing authoritarianism and fascism here.   

Wars have always been used by authoritarian regimes as a means of cracking down on democratic forces at home.  Will the Trump administration use this war as the pretext for taking away all our civil rights and calling off elections? 

As we try to keep the democratic struggles alive in the U.S., we also aim to give voice to human rights struggles and perspectives inside Iran.
